Converting your Instagram Personal Account to a Business Profile

In order to use Direct Scheduling within Buffer Publish, and in order to connect your Instagram account to Buffer Analyze, it will need to be a Business Profile rather than a Personal Account. The only support we have for Personal Accounts is Instagram Reminders within Publish.

This guide contains the following sections:

  1. Converting your Instagram Personal Account to a Business Profile
  2. Reconverting your Instagram Business Profile

Converting your Instagram Personal Account to a Business Profile

Instagram Personal Accounts can be converted to Business Profiles either via the Instagram mobile app, or via Facebook.

It is imperative that a Facebook Page is linked to your Instagram Business Profile. Therefore, we recommend converting via Facebook, since this guarantees that a Facebook Page will be correctly connected to your Instagram account, whereas we have found some users to run into hiccups getting a Facebook Page connected to their Instagram account when converting via the Instagram mobile app.

Convert your Instagram account via Facebook (recommended)
  1. Head over to Facebook and navigate to the Page that you would like to be connected to your Instagram Business Profile.
  2. Click Settings at the top of the Page and then click Instagram on the left hand side.
  3. Click Connect Account towards the top of the screen.
  4. Enter your Instagram login credentials and click Log In. (If you're already signed into Instagram, or your login credentials are saved within your browser, you'll just need to click Continue.)
  5. You'll see a pop up window prompting you to set up your Instagram Business Profile. Follow the on-screen instructions, ensuring your enter your contact info, and then tap Done.
Convert your Instagram account via the Instagram mobile app
  1. Open the Instagram app on your mobile device and navigate to Settings.
  2. Tap Account.
  3. Tap Switch to Professional account.
  4. Tap Next under the Business option. (If you choose a Creator account, you won't be able to use Direct Scheduling in Publish.)
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts, ensuring you select a Facebook Page to link to your Instagram account. You will see a "Don't Connect to Facebook Now" option, but if you don't connect a Facebook Page to your Instagram account, you won't be able to use Direct Scheduling.
  6. If your Instagram Personal Account is currently set to private, you'll be prompted to tap OK in order to confirm switching to a Business Profile, since your account will become public.
  7. Add your contact info and tap Done.

Reconverting your Instagram Business Profile

In certain situations, for example if your Instagram account is currently a Business Profile without a Facebook Page properly connected to it, or if you're experiencing an error when trying to publish posts to Instagram, you will need to convert your Instagram account back to a Personal Account and then reconvert it to a Business Profile. Please follow the steps in this guide to achieve this.

Please note, your Insights will be lost when converting your Instagram account back to a personal profile. You may wish to read and save your Insights before converting.
