Instagram Shop Grid on the mobile app

Many businesses now rely on Instagram to increase brand awareness and it has become a major source of traffic. Of course, links are crucial to driving traffic to the right places. With Instagram’s lack of hyperlink capabilities in posts, many brands solve this by asking followers to refer to the link in their bio within the caption of a post.

This approach has served a need, but not without its own complexities. Businesses need to manually edit the link in their bio for each new post, to ensure the link goes to the right place, depending on what their latest post is promoting. It's this manual and imprecise solution that we are hoping to improve with Shop Grid. Shop Grid allows you to add links to each of your posts, which will then be displayed on a unique page that can be used as the permanent link in your bio.

📝 This article is designed to help users with the Buffer mobile app. All instructions and screenshots are taken from the iOS app, and any steps that are different on Android are noted. You can find the desktop version of this article here.

Setting up your Shop Grid page and updating your Instagram bio link

  1. To get started, tap the round avatar icon at the top left of your screen and select your Instagram account. Tap the Settings icon at the bottom right of your screen and then tap Manage Shop Grid.

  2. Within the Shop Grid area, you'll see your latest 100 published posts, along with any scheduled posts in your queue.

You're able to add up to three custom links that will display at the top of your Shop Grid page. These are links that you may wish to highlight to your followers. Examples might include a link to your online store homepage, a link to new arrivals, or maybe a link to register for an upcoming event.

Start by tapping the Add Link button. Enter your link text and URL and tap Add. You can set the color of your links by clicking Set Link Colour and can update these links as frequently as you wish.

  3. Use the Preview button at the top right of your screen to see how your page looks. This is the link you’ll want to add to your Instagram bio, which will be a unique page of all your posts with the links you add here. To copy the link, head back to Settings and tap Copy Shop Grid URL.

  4. Next, open the Instagram app and tap Edit Profile. Paste the copied Shop Grid URL into the Website field and tap Done. (On Android, you'll need to tap the tick icon at the top right.)

Adding links to your Instagram images

  1. The easiest way to add a link is to include it when you're scheduling a post. Add the link you'd like to direct users to within the URL field.

⚠️ If your post is scheduled as a reminder, unfortunately, the link you include here won't be copied over. For reminder posts, please add the link to your post within the Shop Grid tab, as described below.

  2. You can also add links within the Shop Grid area by heading back to Settings and tapping Manage Shop Grid. Tap on any post to add a link. You can change this link at any time (or leave it blank), and your page will be updated automatically.

How your followers will see your page

Your Instagram account image and custom links will be displayed at the top of your page, and all of your posts will be displayed below. Tapping an image will take the user to the link you added to the post.
