Enabling two factor authentication

Enabling two factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your Buffer account. Whenever you log into your account, after entering your username and password, you'll be asked for a second authentication code. Two factor authentication codes can be generated either via text message (SMS) or Google Authenticator (available on iOS and Android). To use Google Authenticator, you'll need to have the app installed on your iOS or Android device. Learn more here.

📝 At the moment, two factor authentication can only be enabled through Buffer Publish. If you are also subscribed to Buffer Analyze, you will benefit from two factor authentication as a result of it being enabled within Publish. However, if you're only using Analyze, it is not currently possible to enable two factor authentication. We're sorry about this limitation.

Enabling two factor authentication

  1. Click on your profile avatar at the top right of your Publish dashboard and then click on Preferences.

  2. Select the Security tab.

  3. Toggle "Two Factor Authentication" to Enabled.

  4. Click Text Message or Authenticator App depending on which method you'd prefer.

  5. If you chose Text Message, enter your phone number, including country code, and click Next. You'll then receive a 6 digit code to your phone. Enter this code and click Next.

  6. If you chose Google Authenticator, open Google Authenticator on your phone and scan the QR code. Then, click Next. Once scanned, Google Authenticator will display a 6 digit code. Enter this code and click Next.

  7. If you lose your phone, there's a possibility you could get locked out of your Buffer Publish account. Copy and save the one-time recovery code in a safe place, so you can use it later if you're not able to log in with your phone.

  8. Finally, click Done and you should be all set!
