How to add location tags to Instagram posts
:::warning Adding a location to your Instagram posts is only available for:
- Instagram posts that are published automatically. If your post is scheduled as a notification, the location field will only serve as a placeholder to remind you of the location you’ll need to manually add when publishing the post directly in the Instagram app.
- Instagram channels connected to Buffer through Facebook. If you have connected Instagram to Buffer by logging into Instagram directly and want to add locations to your posts, you can use these steps to connect a Facebook page and reauthenticate to Buffer through Facebook. :::
Bring new eyes to your Instagram posts by adding a location. When you search for locations, we'll tag any business or location with an associated Facebook page.
Start typing in the name of the Facebook Page associated in the location field of Buffer. If the Facebook Page has a location set up, it'll populate in your search results.
:::info Check out this guide from Facebook if you'd like steps on adding a location to your own Facebook Page. It's important that this checkbox is ticked. If it's not ticked, this will result in the location being hidden on Instagram.
:::
When your post is published, the location name or the Facebook Page name will appear beneath the Instagram account handle. Clicking on that hyperlink will take the user to a view showing both the "Top" and "Recent" posts tagged with that same location.
:::warning If your post fails with a location error: If Buffer returns an error mentioning the tagged location, the location may no longer be valid in Instagram's database. Try removing the location and retrying the post. You can also try searching for the location again and re-selecting it before scheduling. :::
