Using Templates in Buffer

Templates in Buffer save the post formats you reach for again and again — an engaging question, a launch announcement, a weekly roundup — so you can pull one out and drop in the specifics instead of starting from scratch. You can use professionally crafted templates from our Discover library, save your own, and (on Team and Agency plans) share templates across your whole organization.

What are Templates?

Templates are pre-defined content formats that guide you through creating impactful social media posts. Whether you're promoting a blog post, sharing customer testimonials, or running a limited-time offer, templates provide a clear structure to make your message stand out.
Instead of starting from scratch, you can select a template tailored to your goal and customize it with your own text, links, and visuals.

Why use Templates?

Templates help you:
  • Save time by skipping the blank page.
  • Stay consistent with your brand voice and style.
  • Increase engagement with proven post structures.
  • Stay inspired with new content ideas.

How to use Templates

  1. Click + New Post in the top right corner of your dashboard to open the composer.
  2. Click the Templates button in the top-right toolbar.
  3. Browse templates using the three views at the top of the panel:
  4. Make it yours! Swap in your own text, add your media, and schedule when you're ready.
    • Discover — Buffer's library of professionally crafted templates, organized by type.
    • Team — templates created and shared within your organization.
    • Personal — templates you've created and saved for yourself.
  1. Use the search bar and filters to narrow down what you see, or scroll to explore. Click a template that catches your eye to load it into the composer.

Browsing Templates from the Create space

You can also browse templates directly from your Create space, alongside your Ideas and Feeds, without opening the composer first.

  1. From the Create tab, click Templates.
  2. Use the Discover, Team, and Personal chips to switch between Buffer's template library, templates shared by your team, and templates you've saved for yourself.
  3. Use the search bar and Filter option next to the tabs to narrow down what you're looking for.
  4. Click + New Template in the top right to build one from scratch, or click an existing template to load it into the composer and customize it.

📝 Note: This is the same template library available inside the composer via the Templates button, use whichever entry point fits your workflow.

Creating custom templates

If you want to save a post format you'll use again, you can build your own template.

How many custom templates you can save depends on your plan:

  • Free: up to 1 custom template
  • Essentials: up to 5 custom templates
  • Team and Agency: unlimited custom templates

To create a custom template:

  1. Open the composer, click Templates, and click the + button in the upper right corner.

  2. Add the template's content, a title, and a description.
  3. Under Visibility, choose Only me or if you're part of an organization, you can choose My team to share it with your team. (Personal templates appear only for you; team templates are visible to everyone in your organization).
  4. Click Create Template to complete the process.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Templates

  • Use templates for idea generation when you’re feeling stuck or short on time.
  • Rotate template types to keep your content balanced and engaging throughout the week.
  • Customize the text to match your brand’s tone and personality—templates are a starting point, not a rule.
  • Use Tags to test and track performance to see which types of templates generate the most clicks or conversations.
  • Tailor templates to your audience—think about what kind of content your followers typically interact with.
