## Connecting and refreshing your Threads profile

You can connect multiple Threads profiles to Buffer. However, your Threads account will need to be linked to an Instagram account to connect it to Buffer.

### Connecting your Threads profile

Because Threads accounts are tied to Instagram accounts, the Threads account that connects to Buffer is whichever one is currently active in your browser session. [Meta's April 2026 update](https://about.fb.com/news/2026/04/meta-account/) made it possible to have multiple Threads accounts under a single Meta login, so if you manage more than one, make sure the correct account is active before connecting to Buffer.

**How to make sure the right Threads account is connected:**

1. Log out of both [threads.net](https://threads.net/) and [instagram.com](https://instagram.com/) completely.
2. Head to Instagram and log in using the Instagram account that's linked to the Threads profile you want to connect.
3. Head to [threads.net](https://threads.net/) and choose *Log in with Instagram*. This will sign you in as the matching Threads account.
4. Head back to Buffer and connect the channel.

To connect another Threads account later, repeat the process — log out of both apps, log into Instagram as the next linked account, then sign into Threads via Instagram and connect in Buffer.

### Refreshing your Threads profile

If your connected Threads channel requires a refresh, check out the article [Refreshing a channel in Buffer](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/refreshing-a-channel-in-buffer-7oDS4jk7l1).

:::info
**Important notes**

* Your Threads account must be linked to an Instagram account to connect it to Buffer.
* If your Threads channel is set to private, the access token we use will expire in 90 days, which will require you to refresh your channel.
* The Threads API doesn't currently provide a way to retrieve all Threads accounts associated with a single Meta login, so Buffer can't show you a list of accounts to choose from during the connection flow. You'll need to make sure you're logged into the correct Threads channel using the **Log in with Instagram** option.
* For the best experience with Buffer, accept any permission requests that appear during the connection or refresh process. Skipping them may prevent certain features from working as expected.

## Scheduling Threads posts

:::info
[The "best time to post" feature in Analyze](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/using-buffer-analyze-nHvyBMdqz8) is not available for Threads at this time.

:::

| Features & good-to-knows | Notes |
|:---|:---|
| **Scheduling posts** | Check out our step-by-step guide to [scheduling posts](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/scheduling-posts-4Qdld7giAZ) on any social channel or peruse Threads-specific details below. |
| **Tagging / mentions** | To tag / mention another Threads or Instagram account in your post, type in the exact handle (we are unfortunately unable to search @usernames as you type). Once published to Threads, the account you mentioned will become hyperlinked. For more information, visit our [full guide to adding tags (mentions) here](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/adding-mentions-tags-in-posts-ulm0tGb2Ej). |
| **Hashtags/"Topics"** | *\* Threads supports the use of only one hashtag per post, referred to as "Topics.*” \n \n*\** You will be able to create hashtags with the # symbol, and then once posted, the first word of a hashtag is converted into a topic. All subsequent hashtags appear as plain text. \n \n\* If your hashtag has multiple words, remove any spacing from the hashtag. (e.g. '#BufferScheduling' instead of '#Buffer Scheduling') \n \n\* Hashtags/Topics can contain alphanumeric characters and underscores, but cannot contain just numbers. Learn more about [how hashtags work in Buffer here](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/how-hashtags-work-in-buffer-kusRDsVgD8). |
| **Character limit** | Each message within a thread supports up to 500 characters. Learn more about [Character limits for each social network here](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/character-limits-for-each-social-network-mNDqsEV9Nf). |
| **Links limit** | Threads posts can contain up to **5 links**. If you try to schedule a Threads post (or any item within a Threads thread) with more than 5 links, Buffer will block it in the composer and surface a validation error pointing to the specific post that exceeds the limit. Repeated links each count toward the total. This limit is set by Threads and applies to posts published through Buffer's composer, mobile apps, and public API. |
| **Emoji** | Emojis are supported in Threads 🤗 |
| **Links** | The first link made in a text-only post is configured as the link attachment, which displays a preview. |
| **Daily posting limit** | 250 posts per 24 hour period (each post on a multi-post Thread counts towards the limit). Learn more about [Daily posting limits here](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/daily-posting-limits-kJ0JtpsdvD). |
| **Scheduling multi-post Threads** | Click the + Start Thread option to add a new message to your post, and use the + button to continue to grow your post.\* There is a limit of 25 posts per multi-post Thread. Multi-post Threads are not currently available on mobile, but are available on a web browser.\* Multi-post threads is available on our Free, Essentials, and Team plans. If you are a legacy customer on our Pro, Premium, or Business plans and would like to switch to [our updated pricing](http://buffer.com/pricing), please email us at [hello@buffer.com](mailto:hello@buffer.com) and we’ll be happy to help! [Learn more about why multi-post threads aren't available on our legacy plans here](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/what-are-the-benefits-of-buffers-new-plans-JfbH35SXXn).*\*The Free plan allows for one thread within a post and one threaded post scheduled at a time per queue. However, you can add as many unscheduled threaded draft to your Drafts queue as you like.* |
| **Scheduled Reposts** | Scheduling Quotes or Reposts in advance is not possible at this time. |
| **Alt text** | At this time, alt text is not supported in Threads. |
| **Adding a location** | To add a location to your Threads post, start typing a location in the Location field of the composer and then select a location from the list that appears. |
| **Adding a topic** | Topics can be up to 50 characters. See below for more information on adding topics to your Threads posts. |

## Adding a topic to a Threads post

When creating a Threads post in Buffer, you can attach a *topic* to help organize your content and improve discoverability. Topics act as content labels that group related posts together in Threads, making it easier for followers to explore specific themes or conversations.

You can add a topic in one of two ways:

### Option 1: Add a topic in the "Topic" field

Entering your topic directly in the *Topic field* in the composer gives you the most control and helps maintain consistent formatting across your scheduled content. Your topic will be applied when the post is published.

**Best practice:**

* While Threads allows spaces within the "Topic" field, we recommend **omitting spaces**. Search and discovery systems treat tags as continuous text, and spaces can reduce visibility across Threads and related platforms, such as Instagram and X.
* *Example:* Use *#tennisthreads* instead of *#tennis threads*

To make it easier for you, we pre-populate your five most recently used Threads topics in case you're interested in reusing one.

### Option 2: Use a trending topic

If you're looking for inspiration, you can use one of the **Trending Topics** suggestions in the composer. These topics can help you quickly choose a relevant topic and improve your post’s discoverability.

**Trending Topics in Buffer:**

* Appear in the Threads composer while you’re creating a post
* Are **updated every hour**
* Are based on the **U.S. locale**
* Can be turned off anytime from your **Threads channel settings**

**How to use Trending Topics:**

1. Scroll to the *Topic* field in the composer.
2. Under *Trending*, select one of the suggested topics — or click *More* to view the full list.
3. Once selected, the topic will be added to your post.

## Image and video specifications for Threads

Threads supports images and videos. GIFs are not currently supported.

| Feature | Videos | Images |
|:---|:---|:---|
| **Number allowed per post** | 1 video | 20 images |
| **File size** | 1GB maximum, 5 minutes maximum, longer than 0 seconds minimum | 8MB maximum |
| **File types supported** | MOV or MP4 | JPG, PNG |
| **Custom thumbnail supported** | Not supported |    |
| **Autoplay in the feed** | Videos will autoplay | |
| **Canva integration** | Not supported | Supported |
| **Alt text** | Not supported | Not supported |
| **Aspect ratio** | 9:16 | Between 1:10 and 10:1 (Meta will reject images outside this range) |
| **Carousels** | Not supported | Minimum of 2 photos, maximum of 10 photos |
| **Frame rate** | 23–60 FPS |    |
| **Video bitrate** | VBR, 25Mbps maximum |    |
| **Audio bitrate** | 128kbps |    |

### What if my image is outside Threads' accepted aspect ratio range?

Meta Threads only accepts images with an aspect ratio between **1:10 and 10:1** (i.e. up to ten times wider than tall, or up to ten times taller than wide). If you try to add an image outside this range, Buffer will flag it before the post is scheduled and ask you to crop or replace the image — this prevents posts from getting stuck on "Sending."

To calculate an image's aspect ratio, divide the width in pixels by the height. For example, a 741×62 banner has a ratio of 741/62 ≈ 11.95, which is outside the accepted range. You can adjust it using [Buffer's image editor](https://support.buffer.com/en-us/articles/editing-your-images-in-buffer-NaWdI4YCpC) or re-export from your source tool.

## Threads error library

| Error | Steps to resolve |
|:---|:---|
| `{"error_message":"Threads API Feature Not Available: This user does not have access to this Threads API feature.","error_code":4279044}` | Although it is possible to create a Threads account without a linked Instagram, you will need to have a linked Instagram account to connect Threads to Buffer. |
